After School Program
So what ever happened to the after school program we were hoping to start? Ken Greble met with the principal and the head of community relations at Crestwood Middle School. They welcomed our offer to host a program one day after school a week for sixth graders, especially given the location of Ascension. However, they would like us to work with them to get to know how their program is set up. They suggested that we first do some mentoring of students at the school. Mentoring means meeting with a student a half hour or an hour a week to encourage them in their schoolwork and let them know someone cares. The principal said we would be surprised at what a difference that makes in a child’s life. Want to make a difference too? Ken and Pastor Marcy are planning to sign up to mentor soon. If you would like to join them please talk to one of them. This is the first step in helping Ascension build a closer relationship with the school.
Prayer Train
Do you have the gift of intercession- that is, praying for others? We need you on the prayer train! What is it? When someone has a particular request for prayer you will be contacted by phone or e-mail to say a quick prayer for the one in need. Our prayer chain has been a huge source of comfort and hope for many people over the years. We are updating it to include more people through e-mail. Youth are welcome too! Hop on the prayer train! It’s a vital ministry for all.
Monthly Bible Study
Join us Feb.15th at 11 am for a Bible study focused on the topic “Hope in Times of Suffering.” Next time we will be reading and discussing Job 38.
New Hymnal
Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) is the new Lutheran hymnal that has been published this year for worship in the ELCA. Our congregation’s worship committee chose not to purchase the new books since we have 90% of the new songs in the books we already using. We did, however, purchase the CD-rom which enables us to print the new liturgies in our bulletins. In addition we have purchased and received the Minister’s edition for the altar and the accompaniment books for the organist. All of these were purchased from memorial gifts given in memory of Johanna Warren. Pastor Marcy also has two pew edition books in her office if you would like to see one. We have already been using one of the new liturgies written by Marty Haugen. It was introduced last summer and we also used it this fall. We look forward to introducing other liturgies from the new worship book for Lutherans.
